Learning to oil paint can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Some beginners are anxious about taking up this ages old art form, but they shouldn’t be. Here are some great tips to on oil painting for beginners.

You first should start your oil painting with an acrylic under paint because acrylic dries quickly. When you use oil as under paint it will take some time for it to dry. Acrylic under painting can quicken your work with your canvas.

Good lighting brings out the color more and also lessens the strain on your eyes. As a result make sure that you have a good lighting. It is advisable that you paint on a place with plenty natural sunlight or if not buy an indoor light that has a good lighting.

If you use oil paint thinners and cleaners because some of these chemicals are toxic and not good for your health so be cautious when working with this product. Consider using a water soluble oil paint instead because this can be diluted with water and eliminating the need for other solvents. Make sure that each layer of your oil painting should have higher oil content than the ones below. This reduces the chance of your paint to crack.

Objects that are advance are warmer and more intense compared to not advance objects. So to create an illusion of distance in your paintings, paint receding objects with cooler less intense color.

Sometimes there is an instance in which you cannot draw anything. You had the idea but you cannot picture it out. What you will do is put down your brush and gets some fresh air, walk for a while or listen to music. Do not get discourage, everyone experiences that not just you. Walking and getting some fresh air makes you relax while music can affect your mood, it can brighten up a heavy feeling.

Avoid holding your brush as if you are holding a pencil that is too close to the bristles. Oils brushes are made long for a reason so better be familiar with it. This is made longer so that you can paint further away from the canvas. Hold the brush either in the middle or the end of the brush, start practicing right now.

To get started with the art of oil painting you are faced to buy the materials needed. Oil painting materials are quiet expensive and there are many varieties of materials to choose from which is little hard for the oil painting beginner. What we have here is a guide for you in purchasing your oil painting materials.

1. Choosing the right easel for your painting? You have to consider some few things like what is it made of the height. The most important thing to remember is to have an easel that is sturdy. Many easels can be bought in art shops but if you do not have a budget then you can make one for your own. There are tips on how to make an easel that is just right for you. Having a self made easel gives you an ease of not adjusting anything when using because you can make it to put the canvas where you wanted. Portable easels are mostly used if you wanted to paint outdoors or out of your working place.

2. Next are white bristle brushes. Get a variety of brushes and it is suggested to get animal hair brushes and not the synthetics brush. Animal hairbrush handles the pigment better and is more natural than synthetic hairbrush. Q-tips cotton are also better in oil painting because they can create very subtle stroke with its soften edges. Using white bristle brushes needs more practice though. It is recommended to use a shaving brush, cut it with a brush cutter.

3. Pads of wax coated paper or disposable palettes is also needed when create your painting. When you use only one, tear it off and its fine but it is suggested that you get to disposable palettes. One is for putting your colors down, while the other one is used for mixing colors only.

4. Different oils can be mixed with your pigments. Start with Cold Pressed Linseed oil but you can experiment later on. The latter oil mentioned earlier is extracted from trees and is general purpose oil. A palette knife is to be used when mixing the oil and resins into the pigments. Alkyd resin is needed to fasten the drying time of the pigments. If you are not familiar with alkyd buy a general purpose one until you know which one you want to use.

5. Other essential materials are paint thinner or mineral spirits. In using these substances make sure to get one that is not too smelly or strong because these are not that good to ones. Brush washer is also needed to put the paint thinner in and wash your brushes. Rags are preferred for messes and cleanups.

6. Canvas boards are good for oil painting practice. Prepare your canvas and buy it unprimed. There are pre-stretched canvases available in department stores or art shops though this comes with a price.

How to Paint Leaves for Oil Painting
Painting leaves is one of the most important part in any floral or nature painting. Looking at leaves closely one gets to understand the structure and textures in leaves which would other wise go unnoticeable. When you think of painting leaves remember they are not just outlines in green. Begin with close observations on different types of leaves and then begin painting leaves. Here are a few oil painting tips for beginners to get the perfect leaf.

First tip for painting leaves is to begin by observing different types of leaves. Go to parks, gardens and nature trails and observe different types and shapes of leaves. This will help you understand that a leaf is not just something that is filled with colour green. From the observations select any types of leaves you would like to paint. It would be best if you are a beginner in oil painting to keep real leaves in front of you to get a realistic nature painting. If you are painting a particular flower then do appropriately choose their respective leaves for best results.

Since a new artist would not get the shapes of leaves correctly it would be better if you draw a leaf on your canvas or paper before beginning to paint leaves. Once you have the structure then you can also draw few ridges and dividing lines in between for guidance during colouring process. Now you begin colouring which is the most difficult part as many experienced artist’s also have to try hard to achieve the best results while painting leaves. Keep the nature concepts clear and understand that there are no outlines in nature. Hence you will make a light outline of your leaf with a darker shade of viridian green. This works best for many artists’ as viridian green is a best green and also merges easily in any other hue or shade of green.

Begin with filling your leaves with lime green or sap green closest to your model leaves original colour. Here there are no rules and each artist can select a different green or make a new shade in green to get the closest green of your model leaf. After the basic filling or colour you can use another shade of green to paint the ridges in between and also sections with the main dividing line. Most important tip for painting with oil paints is that once the leaves are painted let it dry and observe the final effect, as many times the fresh oil painted leaf will look bright but on drying you may not get the same effects and you would like to over paint it with a darker colour. Finally paint the outline with free strokes of a darker shade of your leaf to get the neat boundary of your painted leaf structure demarcating its presence in your oil painting.

Some artists also paint the inside first and then go painting the outline, whereas some prefer to begin from outside and then fill up colours while painting leaves. There are no hard and fast rules for techniques in painting leaves and any method works as long as you get the perfect leaf.

As long as the public and private were not separated, the king hired the portrait painters that have been stars at that time like Diego Velazquez. Famous painters in the Great Age of the oil painting were: Agnolo Bronzino, Titian, Giovanni Battista Moroni, Pissanelo, Georg Gisze, Raphael, Jan Van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt and many others.

In the bourgeois public sphere, which originated in the 18th century, the oil painting became more and more a specialized realm of rational-critical debate. The portrait started to capture the subjectivity, fostered in the bourgeois family. As the portrait became more and more differentiated in modern times, portrait painters were required specialized skills for painting landscape, pet and human. For the hiring of oil portrait became the opinion of painting critics relevant. Also, with the advent of modern times, the education of the oil portrait painters became extremely relevant. The hiring of oil portrait artists started to depend on his/ her education and skills, rather than on his origin.

In the early modern times the civil society started to develop and oil portrait painters started to establish social institutions (which exist also nowadays) in order to represent the interests of the oil painters and the art of the painting portrait to the public. In the early 20th century the culture industry became mass, as well as the oil painting portrait and it became fashionable to hire oil painters from artist societies such as The American Society of Portrait Artists.

However, in the area of globalization the boundaries between the public and the private sphere are shaken. The society turned into a global village and the ways to get an painting portrait became globalized, also. These days more and more Internet hiring of portrait painters becomes popular. This is easier for the customer and the customer can source quality portrait painters from all over the world rather than being forced to take a less qualified portrait artist next door. Also it does not require anymore sitting for many days to complete the oil painting portrait and photos of very special moments can be painted in addition. Nowadays, you can find the best oil portrait painters for your subject online at a great price!

You should check portfolio of artists on internet. Check for their previous work, cost and quality. Then hire a professional with best portfolio, quality and with affordable price.

There are some essentials that every painter needs. Let’s start with brushes. Sable brushes are usually best because they hold both their shape and the paint better.

Also, canvases can be bought pre-stretched and already primed. More experienced painters generally like to prepare their canvases themselves, but for the beginner this can be overwhelming.

Then there’s the palette and paints. There are disposable palettes and paints made especially for beginners. Turpentine or mineral spirits are used to thin the paint, and oils such as linseed or poppy are used to thicken it. Some teachers recommend their beginners start out with vegetable oil.

The beginner should put the paints on the palette in the same order every time. That way, their placement will become second nature.

The basic paint colors needed are flake white, ivory black, cadmium yellow, chrome yellow, cobalt blue, ultramarine, burnt sienna, raw sienna, and crimson.

Fat Over Lean Technique

One of the first techniques a beginner needs to learn is the fat over lean method. Fat oil paint is heavier, so therefore takes longer to dry. Paints with less oil in them will dry quicker. These are considered lean paints. The drying times of various oil paints can range from 12 hours to over a week.

Another technique is called impasto. This is where the paint is laid on the canvas heavily with a brush or knife, leaving the strokes visible. It creates a beautifully textured painting that appears to leap out at the viewer.

A painting should always be left to dry in the light. Leaving it to dry in the dark can cause a thin layer of oil to rise to the surface. This can be removed with alcohol, but if not done carefully the painting can be damaged.

Artistic Challenges

Besides the technical details of oil painting, it’s important to remember the artistic side too. Many painters compose the painting in their heads first. It’s good to be aware of what the focal point of the painting will be, and to understand how not to take away from it.

Some painters sketch the painting on the canvas with acrylic or water-soluble paint before beginning. Pencil or charcoal can be used also.

Clean Up

Finally, after the artistic masterpiece is rendered, there’s the clean-up. Many art stores sell pre-mixed cleaning solution for brushes, and this is a good option when someone is still a beginner.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to do much art before, warm up by sketching. This will give you a feel for transferring what you see to a two-dimensional surface and help you overcome some of the challenges you will encounter. For your first painting, choose something uncomplicated, such as a simple landscape or a bowl of fruit. Of course, “simple” does not mean boring. Be sure to include something in the composition that excites you and you cannot wait to paint, such as a bright red lawn chair on the end of a rather drab dock. Sketch your idea on paper first. Next, sketch a rough outline onto your canvas panel. Most artists do an underpainting on the canvas, and this is a good way for you to transition from sketching to actual painting. There are no details in an underpainting, just broad swathes of color that suggest a blurry image of the work. The underpainting creates a base for the layers of paint that will follow, and is your first chance to make changes and corrections. You can accelerate your progress through lessons or classes with an experienced artist. As with everything else, there are basic techniques in oil painting, and learning from someone else can save you years of frustration and disappointment. Most of all, knowing the basics will set you free to paint what is in your heart, and share you vision with others.

Because the pigment is opaque, mistakes can be painted over and corrected, something you cannot do with watercolors. If mistakes pile up one atop the other, you can even scrape away the paint and start fresh.

Oil painting is also an art form you can work on when the mood takes you, or when you have a bit of free time. There is no need to finish a painting in a certain period of time, which means your hobby will never become a chore.

in order to paint, it does not mean you pick up a brush and apply some strokes on the canvas! It is all about discipline, learning and understanding different aspects of oil painting basics.

Art must be understood no matter what form or type of art it is. A picture in any type of painting is made up of different components such as color, structure and technical appearance.

Before you start with your oil painting, Understanding the structure of the picture that you are trying to paint is important. Think about how your picture will attract buyers and what objects will you include in this picture and in what positions?

If you are aiming for a three dimensional look, this will be extremely challenging although it will greatly enhance the appearance of the picture. Different shading should be applied to make the picture appear real. Colors in a picture form the most essential part and you need to think carefully before choosing or mixing the right paint.

If you have an idea that you want to paint, it is time to think of which oil paints to choose. As you are a novice and your budget may be low, it is best to search for high quality oil paints that are affordable at the same time. Opt for acrylic paint for the initial layer as they dry much quicker and their prices are lower too. This means you will not have to compromise your oil painting appearance with low quality paint.

Selecting the right painting brush is one of the most important thing. Oil painting brushes come in two types, either soft or hard brush. Soft brushes are used for finer finishing touches to the picture and hard brushes are for long strokes. Your brush size should not be longer than 10 as you are a beginner.

Do not forget to rinse the brush after you have finished as the oil paint colors usually accumulate in the brush. Many arts and craft shops have brush cleaning agents available.
